DCC enters pre-quarterfinals

HYDERABAD: Deccan Coaching Centre (Mallepally) scored a 3-0 win over JJ Nagar in the pre-quarterfinals of the Gotla Cup football tournament here on Saturday.

Winger Talaha latched on to a pass from Zeeshan in the 10th minute to give Deccan an early lead.

Ten minutes into the second session, Zain struck off a pass from Atif. Later, striker Abdullah dribbled his way into the striking zone to complete the tally in the dying minutes.

In another pre-quarterfinal, Red Hills defeated Greater Hyderabad (Ammuguda) 4-3 via tiebreaker after the teams were locked goalless at full-time.

In the tiebreaker, Arshad, Syed Amir, Syed Zubir and Mohd Irfan scored for the winner while Anju, Lawrence and Avinash were successful for the loser.

Easy for Valluvar Nagar

Valluvar Nagar scored a 2-0 win over Bolarum in the Sachdev Sports under-13 football tournament, organised by Shastri Soccer Club, at Trimulgherry Village Grounds here. Simon Gunasekharan and Samuel were the scorers.

In other matches, Gandhinagar and Gymkhana, and Valerian School and JJ Nagar were locked in goalless draws.

Ramakrishnapuram and Kamala Nagar settled for a two-all draw with Karthik scoring a brace for the former while Gidian and Prabhu struck for the latter.

Sarojini CA posts win

Sarojini Cricket Academy scored a 37-run win over Pepsi XI in the under-13 category league match of the all-India Pepsi Cup sub-juniors cricket tournament in Bangalore.

The scores: Sarojini CA 104 (Naren 31, Sahitya 32, Rohan three for 29) bt Pepsi XI 67 (Naren three for 20, Kranti three for 18).

Satyam in final

Satyam scored a 40-run win over Accenture in the semifinals of the Maytas Properties Corporate Cup first-ever indoor cricket tournament at Hi-Tex International Convention Centre (HICC, Madhapur) here.

The scores: Satyam 230 for five (Anand 64, Subrahmanyam 61) bt Accenture 190 (Ramakrishna 61, Srivatsan 50).

Darts championship

The fifth National darts championship will be held in Hyderabad from June 9 at SAAP tennis complex and the State teams to take part in this event would be selected based on the performances of the State championship to be held from Sunday at the Nizam Club.

Pradeep, Nidhi sparkle

It was a glorious treble for Pradeep Reddy and a double for Ch. Nidhi in the Advantage Tennis Academy-AITA Talent Series tennis tournament at the Gymkhana Tennis Complex, here on Saturday.

The results (all finals): Boys: U-18: Singles: Pradeep Reddy bt S.M. Suraj 6-2, 6-3. Doubles: Pradeep/ Yeshwanth Nadendla bt S. Kamal/ S.V. Vasanth 6-0, 7-6(3).

U-14: Singles: Pradeep Reddy bt Sabareesh Hariharan 6-2, 6-4. Doubles: B. Shreenesh/ S. Hariharan bt Siddharth Dabrai/ S. Raghavendra 4-2, 4-2.

Girls: U-18: Singles: Neha Purohit bt Ch. Nidhi 6-3, 6-3. Doubles: Neha/ Nidhi bt Nayantara/ Pooja R. Patil 6-0, 6-1.

U-14: Singles: Nidhi bt Vennela Devineni 4-1, 4-0. Doubles: Vennela/ Shambhavi Dixit bt M. Manaswini/ Vadali Keertana 4-2, 4-1.

Cricket camp concludes

The Hindu-sponsored cricket camp of the Visakhapatnam District Cricket Association (VDCA) for under-13, under-15 and under-17 boys and girls concluded at Visakhapatnam on Saturday.

Former president of the Andhra Cricket Association D.V. Subba Rao urged the young trainees to set a goal and overcome hurdles on the way. "Cricket is now a mind game and hard work, discipline and dedication are required for the players to achieve greater heights," he said.

Subba Rao also said that The Hindu had a tradition of accomplished sports writers such as Jack Fingleton, Gurunathan contributing to the paper.

Chief of Bureau of The Hindu B. Prabhakar Sarma recalled the rich sports tradition of the newspaper, which was sponsoring several sports events including The Hindu Trophy here.

Certificates were given away to the trainees by Mr. Subba Rao, Regional General Manager of The Hindu T.V. Suresh, vice-president of VDCA P. Vishnu Kumar Raju, Mr. Sarma and former Ranji vice-captain M.S. Kumar. Joint secretaries of VDCA G.J.J. Raju and J.K.M. Raju also participated.
