Kolkata: Top-seeded Grandmaster Deepan Chakravorthy of Tamil Nadu clinched the Tea Board of India-Chess for Youth Premiere section title after a tiebreak against International Master Abhijeet Gupta of Rajasthan on Saturday. The eight-round Swiss league one-hour rapid chess tournament was organised by Dibyendu Barua Chess Academy at the Netaji Indoor Stadium here. Deepan and Abhijeet scored 7.5 points from a possible 8. To resolve the tie, the two played two blitz games of five minutes each. Abhijeet won the first, while Deepan won the second. In the sudden death blitz game, Deepan drew with black pieces and was awarded the title. In the under-16 section, defending champion Sandipan Chatterjee won the title comfortably with a score of 7.5 points. Sriya Bhattacharya was declared the best girl in this section with 5 points. Ankit Banerjee won the under-14 boys' title, while Shaati Majumder clinched the girls' title. Sumit Roy and Dhriti Shankar tied for the top slot on 7 points in the under-12 section but Sumit pipped Dhriti to the first place on a better progressive score. In the under-10 category, overnight leader Aditya Chakraborty won the title with a score of 7.5 and Soumi Mukherjee clinched the girls' title with 6.5 points. In the under-8 section, Subhradeepta Das was declared champion with 7 points, while Arpita Mukherjee was declared the best girl on 6 points. PTI
