CHIKMAGALUR: D.H. Shankaramurthy, Minister for Higher Education, has instructed officials to find a solution within two days to the problem of distributing foodgrains to all below poverty line (BPL) families. Presiding over the zilla panchayat quarterly review meeting here on Thursday, Mr. Shankaramurthy said he was under pressure from legislators to resolve the issue quickly and promised that he would discuss the matter with the Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister. C.T. Ravi, MLA, objected to a decision of the authorities to stop distribution of foodgrains as the number of beneficiaries was more than what was stipulated by the Government. He said there were 3,500 excess card-holders in Chikmagalur taluk and action could be taken after scrutinising the list. D.M. Putte Gowda, MLC, wanted to know the action intended to be taken by the officials. D.N. Jeevaraj, Chief Whip in the Legislative Assembly, said there were anomalies in the survey conducted in 2005 and ineligible persons had been included in the list. Gangadhar, Deputy Director of Food and Civil Supplies, said most illegal card-holders could be weeded out while taking photographs of the beneficiaries. Deputy Commissioner V. Chandrashekar asked ineligible families to voluntarily surrender the cards.
