Kolkata: The ruling Left Front has again appealed to the Opposition to join it in talks for the restoration of normality in the troubled Nandigram area. "Without the presence of Opposition parties in such talks the political initiative for peace in the area cannot be successful," Chairman of the Left Front Committee Biman Bose said here on Saturday. "While the initiative for peace being taken at the State level will continue uninterrupted, the Left Front appeals to the Opposition to start the process at both the Purbo Medinipur district and Nandigram block levels," he said after a meeting of Left Front leaders. The meeting was called in the backdrop of the inconclusive all-party talks held here on May 24 to determine ways to bring back peace in the Nandigram area. Steps to carry forward the peace process through subsequent all-party discussions were discussed. Referring to the May 24 talks, Mr. Bose said that the holding of meetings at the State level "never negated the need for further dialogue at the district and local levels." "What role can a political party play in attempts to restore peace in Nandigram if it is represented only at the State level talks and not at meetings at the local level?" he asked. Senior All-India Forward Bloc leader Ashok Ghosh, who had convened the May 24 meeting, said that Mr. Bose will be coordinating the peace talks being proposed at different levels.
