IN ALL ENTHUSIASM: People queue up to vote in the Assembly elections, at a polling station at Chimbel, around 6 km from Panaji, Goa, despite rain on Saturday.
NEW DELHI: An estimated 66 per cent of the electorate cast their votes in the Goa Assembly elections for the 40 constituencies held on Saturday. (A PTI report said Goa's Chief Electoral Officer Ramesh Negi told a press conference in Panaji that 72 per cent of the electorate exercised their franchise.) The results will be announced on June 5. Briefing reporters here, Deputy Election Commissioner R. Bhattacharya said the polling was peaceful and a large number of voters had exercised their franchise. He said that the actual polling percentage would go up as people who had visited the polling stations before the scheduled closing time had to wait for long to cast their votes. Hamirpur recorded 60 per cent polling; Khairagarh and Malkharoda in Chhattisgarh recorded 65 and 60 per cent respectively; Doltonganj in Jharkhand 52 per cent; Ullal in Karnataka 65 per cent; Shivpuri in Madhya Pradesh 47 per cent and Khundrapam and Khangabok constituencies in Manipur 79 and 89 per cent respectively. Polling was peaceful in these constituencies.
