CHANDIGARH: He stumbled a couple of times, but Prakash Amritraj got up strongly every time to eventually cruise through to a 7-6(5), 6-1 victory over the top-seeded Karan Rastogi in the final of the SAIL $10,000 ITF men's futures tennis tournament at the CLTA Complex here on Saturday. It was a happy homecoming for the US-based Prakash as it was his maiden title at this level. He had made the finals of two Challenger tournaments at Forest Hills and Fergana, but had never made it to the final of a Futures event, as he had mostly been busy on the big league. Incidentally, this was the first title for the 23-year-old Prakash, after he had won three titles on the trot in the Satellite circuit in India in 2003.
Father's wisdom
"It is great to come back and win a title like this. My dad maintains that it is easier winning a few matches in the big events than win all the matches in a weaker tournament," said Prakash as he recalled his father, Vijay Amritraj's words about taking the small sure steps into the big professional world. Prakash collected 18 ATP points and $1,300 while Karan had to be content with 12 ATP points and $900.
