THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The central council of the Kerala Cricket Association will meet here on Sunday to take stock of the sudden turn of events which paved the way for the resignation of S.K. Nair as the president of the Association on May 26. Mr. Nair had resigned a day after he was surprisingly defeated in the Thiruvananthapuram District Cricket Association elections, claiming he had lost the mandate to represent his home district in the KCA, though he could have continued as KCA president for two more years under the relevant byelaws of the Association.
Interim president
In the event of the meeting accepting Mr. Nair's resignation, the central council will also be forced to name an interim president, from among its five vice-presidents, until the term of the current office-bearers gets over in July 2009. Considerable interest is also being attached on whether the meeting would give the go ahead for the two-member internal audit team to complete its work. The team was asked to stop all work by the KCA secretary last week on the ground that its continuance in office would have to be discussed in the KCA central council again, under the new circumstances. In the meanwhile, six members of the KCA, through a joint statement, has appealed to the central council to desist itself from discussing Mr. Nair's resignation on Sunday with the argument that it was only the KCA general body which had the authority to discuss the issue.
Unfortunate
Terming Mr. Nair's resignation as "unfortunate", the appeal said every effort should be made by all members of the KCA to persuade Mr. Nair to continue as KCA president through the next two years. "It was in keeping with the democratic norms that Mr. Nair had submitted his resignation, after his defeat in the TDCA elections. However, considering the yeomen service rendered by him to Kerala cricket through the last two decades, the KCA general body should be convened soon to discuss the issue before any further action is taken on his resignation. It is also our opinion that only the KCA general body has the authority to discuss the issue, considering the fact it was that body which had elected Mr. Nair as KCA president for a second term of four years in 2005." Further, the appeal also said that considering the future of Kerala cricket, it was the duty of all office-bearers of the KCA to forget all differences and restore the image of the Association, which now lay in tatters. The signatories of the appeal were K.N. Raghavan (Ernakulam), K.G. Premjith (Pathanamthitta), Majeed and Manoj (both Alappuzha), Jayaraj (Kannur) and C. Pradeep Kumar (Malappuram).
