Music festival organised to celebrate birthday of Gangubai Hangal

HONOURED: Writer S.L. Bhairappa inaugurating a music festival organised to mark the 95th birthday of vocalist Gangubai Hangal in Hubli on Saturday.

HUBLI: Noted writer S.L. Bhairappa has said the best way to preserve and foster classical music was to draw in more listeners.

He was inaugurating a night-long music festival organised to celebrate the 95th birthday of Hindustani vocalist Gangubai Hangal at the Sawai Gandharva Hall here on Saturday night. The Hangal Music Foundation and the Hubli Art Circle had organised the programme in association with the Kannada daily "Kannada Prabha".

Mr. Bhairappa said it was not necessary that a place would always give birth to great musicians or artists every generation. It may not be possible to always produce good musicians but at least one can capture a new audience for good music.

For that to happen, more music programmes need to be held so that people get an opportunity to listen to music, he said. The writer sought to differentiate between classical music and other types, which he said, could only excite a listener. It was classical music that had a soothing effect, he said.

The writer said a sense of abandonment was required to enjoy music.

He emphasised the need for teaching music to children, as it would inculcate cultural values in them.

Ms. Hangal was overwhelmed with the felicitation. "Foster the Hangal Music Foundation, just the way you fostered Gangubai," she said.

Musician Yashwant Buwa Joshi of Mumbai and musicologist Hayavadan Joshi of Belgaum were felicitated on the occasion. T.J.S. George, Editorial Adviser of Indian Express Group, and others were present.

Earlier, founder president of the foundation Manoj Hangal spoke about the activities of the foundation .
