Eminent persons to be honoured

Bangalore: Sri Ramanuja Seva Trust will honour several eminent persons with the Sri Ramanuja Seva Sri Award in recognition of their services, on June 3 at Yavanika here. The award-winners include industrialist R. Deshikan, former member of the Planning Commission A.V.R. Char, vocalists G.V. Ranganayakamma and G.V. Neela, Director-General and Inspector-General of Police K.R. Sreenivasan and Chairman of the Abhimani group T. Venkatesh. — Staff Reporter

`Increase bonus for BMTC employees'

Bangalore: The Akhanda Karnataka Karmika Mahamandali has demanded that Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) employees should get a 30 per cent increase in their bonus for 2006-07.

Speaking to presspersons here on Saturday, C. Gundappa, secretary of the organisation, said even though the employees are supposed to work for only eight hours a day, they were working for 12 to 15 hours and were not being given overtime for the extra hours worked.

Protest against teaching of English

Kolar: Several pro-Kannada outfits led by the district unit of the Kannada Sahitya Parishat staged a demonstration in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office here on Saturday condemning the Government's decision to teach English from the first standard in government schools. The decision went against a resolution adopted by the Kannada Sahitya Sammelan held in Shimoga, they said. — Staff Correspondent

New college

for Bagepalli

Bagepalli: A new government first grade college has been started in Bagepalli town from this academic year. The office of the college would temporarily function from the premises of the Government PU College for Boys. Applications for admission will be issued from June 8 onwards, the principal of the new college, N.V. Venkatashivareddy, said.

Hostel for women with disabilities

Kolar: Ashakiran Education and Rejuvenation Organisation, sponsored by the Department for the Welfare of Disabled and Senior Citizens, has started a hostel in Kolar exclusively for employed women and girl students with physical disabilities. While employed women have to pay a monthly fee of Rs. 600, there is no fee for girl students, a press release said. — Staff Correspondent

Two hospital staff suspended

Chickballapur: District Health Officer Rajiv has suspended two employees of the government hospital here on the charge of dereliction of duty. They are Staff nurse Umadevi and a Group D employee, Saraswatamma. Action was initiated against them for the death of a newborn baby who was bitten by a stray dog recently. — Staff Correspondent

Farmer robbed of valuables

BELLARY: A gang of four robbers struck at the house of Sambashivaiah, a farmer, in Srinivasnagar camp on the outskirts of the city and decamped with Rs. 8,000 cash and over 50 grams of gold, in the early hours of Saturday. According to the police, Sambashivaiah and his wife were sleeping outside the house when the robbers woke them up, threatened them and decamped with valuables kept inside the house. A case has been registered in Bellary (rural) police station. — Staff Correspondent

Hassan: Gangamma of Hassan has been selected to participate in 28th National Master Athletics Championship to be held in Bangalore from June 8 to 10. She is working in Jaya Chamarajendra Government Hospital in Hassan. District Surgeon Prem Kumar in a press release said that Ms. Gangamma would participate in the 100-metre run, 400-metre run and long jump. — Staff Correspondent

Examination

Gulbarga: The Karnataka State Open University will conduct the Final MA and M.Com examination from June 7. The time-table and hall tickets have been sent to the respective examination centres in the districts. Hall tickets can be obtained two days before the examination. Seeds for farmers

Gulbarga: Small and marginal farmers in Gulbarga will get seeds at 75 per cent subsidy for the Kharif season. Nearly Rs 2.63 crore has been released as temporary grants towards this, Joint Director of Agriculture J.M. Tippeswamaiah said in a press release. Certified seeds can be obtained from registered suppliers through open tendering process. They will be stored and distributed through the 48 Raitha Samparka Kendras and eight other outlets of the Agriculture Department in the district. Farmers will get seeds of paddy, jowar, maize, tur, black gram, green gram, soya, ground nut, sunflower, jatropha, cotton and some other crops. — Staff Correspondent

Counselling

Bidar: Counselling for admission to the Government Polytechnic in Bidar and the G.N. Polytechnic in Thana Kushnoor village in Aurad will be held from June 4 to 14. Students can be accompanied by their parents. They have to attend the counselling with their original documents. Couple end life

Gulbarga: a newly wed couple allegedly committed suicide in Kollur village in Chincholi taluk on Friday. Subhash Nagappa (30) and Nagamma Subhash (20) reportedly consumed poison in their house. Neighbours found them dead at night.

They were married 20 days ago. Police suspect that family problems might be the reason for the suicide. Subhash was married earlier and had two children, police said. A case has been registered in the Chincholi police station.
