Man approaches court for info on `missing' brother

BERHAMPUR: A habeas corpus was filed in the High Court by Bulu Sasmal of Phulta village in Ganjam district, seeking a direction to officials concerned to inform about the whereabouts of his brother Maheswar Sasmal, who was missing since May 12.

Maheswar went missing after supporters of the Phulta Shanti Committee allegedly attacked him.

According to lawyer Pitabas Panda, the court accepted the case and the next hearing would be held on June 6.

Mr. Bulu lodged a complaint with the police on May 13. A police team from the Berhampur Sadar police station that launched a search operation could not locate him. On May 14, the police recovered his motorcycle from a tank near the village.

"The police are yet to find out what has happened to my client," Mr. Panda said, and alleged that his client's family was ostracised by the villagers. "The family is living in a state of panic as it is not allowed to meet anyone from outside," Mr. Panda charged.

Mr. Bulu had to approach the High Court as his efforts to elicit information from the police and the administration proved futile, he said.
