More trouble for Mahanti

Rajasthan court rejects bail plea

CUTTACK: Facing arrest by the Rajasthan police, Orissa DGP-rank officer B.B. Mahanti seemed to have landed in more trouble on Saturday when a lower court in Rajasthan refused to grant anticipatory bail to the senior IPS officer.

According to reports reaching here, the Additional District Judge of Jaipur rejected Mahanti's appeal. The court reportedly refused to grant advance bail when the prosecution objected to it saying that the officer was not cooperating with the Rajasthan police.

A four-member police team had come here to arrest and interrogate Mahanti earlier this week. But he remained elusive after proceeding on casual leave on medical grounds. The Rajasthan police team left the State on Thursday night after failing to trace the officer at his office, residence and hospitals.

Next move

Meanwhile, Mahanti's counsel Ashok Mohanty said that the officer would approach the Rajasthan High Court for anticipatory bail. The top cop had earlier got some interim protection from the Orissa High Court and the Supreme Court.

On the other hand, the Rajasthan police team would submit a report to the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court of Jaipur seeking a non-bailable arrest warrant against Mahanti. "We will again urge the court to issue arrest warrant against Mahanti stating about the motive behind the DGP, who is utilising his power and post to evade arrest," said Mukund Behari, head of the police team that visited the State, over telephone.
