Rs. 3.5 cr. to boost passenger amenities

Southern Railway sanctions funds for Tiruchi and Thanjavur stations

TIRUCHI: Southern Railway has sanctioned additional works for the improvement of passenger amenities at the Tiruchi Junction and Thanjavur railway stations.

The Tiruchi Railway Division has been sanctioned Rs.3.5 crore to take up additional works at these stations, which are expected to be completed before the end of the current financial year.

Improvements to the second point of entry and provision of additional shelters on Platforms 2, 3, 4 and 5 are sanctioned for Tiruchi Junction. The conversion of Platform 1 to meet broad gauge requirements, improvements to the second entry and the extension of the foot overbridge to Platform 1 are the works sanctioned for Thanjavur.

At Tiruchi Junction, improving the concourse and circulating areas, besides augmenting facilities on the platforms and retiring rooms are the others works being carried out.

Divisional Railway Manager R.C. Jat said the works relating to passenger amenities at Tiruchi Junction, worth over Rs.5 crore, had already been awarded.

Air-conditioned lounge

As part of the works, a portion of the waiting room was being converted into an air-conditioned lounge. Work on the air-conditioned dormitory on the first floor was in an advanced stage.

Works relating to passenger amenities are under way also at Thanjavur, Kumbakonam, Mayiladuthurai, Vriddhachalam, Villupuram, Ariyalur and Pondicherry.

Srirangam station

The work of raising the platform and building a subway at Srirangam railway station had also been awarded. The DRM said that in order to improve security, surveillance cameras were planned at Tiruchi Junction, to be installed within three months.

There were also plans to install a luggage scanner.
