MANGALORE: Two persons have been arrested for allegedly trying to bribe voters on behalf of a candidate and seven vehicles reportedly used to transport voters to polling booths have been seized by the police during the byelection in the Ullal Assembly Constituency on Saturday. Superintendent of Police B. Dayananda said that the personnel of Konaje police arrested two persons, seized a multi-utility vehicle and recovered Rs. 61,000 from them at Natekal. The police have identified the accused as Rakesh Lobo of New Bejai Road here and Shivakumar of Kenchanahalli in Bangalore. A suitcase containing currency notes in the denomination of Rs. 1,000 was recovered from the vehicle, Mr. Dayananda said. The police said they had been informed that the accused were allegedly distributing cash to voters on behalf of the Congress candidate U.T. Khader. The accused had reportedly confessed to distributing cash to voters, the police said. A case has been registered.
Seized
The police said that five vehicles were seized in Panambur police station limits and two in Ullal police station limits. Mr. Dayananda said that political parties were allegedly using these vehicles to transport voters to polling booths. This was a violation of the rules laid down by the Election Commission, he said. A case has been registered .
