Staff Reporter

They used fake documents to obtain Rs. 50 lakh loan

CHENNAI: The Central Crime Branch police on Saturday arrested a couple on charges of using fake documents for obtaining bank loan.

The couple, Babulal Surana (48) and his wife Lalitha Kanwar (48), residents of Sowcarpet area, pledged documents of their house with a nationalised bank in 1997 and obtained a loan of Rs.1 crore.

In 2004, the couple used a colour photocopy of the same document to take a loan of Rs. 50 lakh each from another nationalised bank in Nungambakkam.

On scrutiny of the documents, the Nungambakkam bank officials found them to be fake. Following this, the manager of the bank filed a complaint with the Commissioner of Police last week.

The case was handed over to the CCB police and after investigation they arrested the couple on Saturday.

The CCB authorities said in majority of the property-related cases, the offenders used fake documents to obtain loan and sold it illegally to gullible people. However, this was the first case of fraud, where the accused used a colour photocopy of the document. The accused were remanded to judicial custody, police added.

Job racket: five held

The Central Crime Branch (CCB) police on Friday arrested five persons on charges of cheating a 26-year-old person by taking money against a bogus job offer abroad.

M. Kamalakanthan, a resident of Pozhichalur had paid Rs. 8 lakh in instalments to Suresh, who assured him employment opportunity in Canada. The victim paid the amount over a period of five months since October last year. When Kamalakanthan did not get the job or his money, he filed a complaint with the police.

The CCB authorities arrested Mayilvaganam (51), Selvachandran (47), Dharmalingam (63), Kamala (57) and Jamuna (36) in Nesappakkam. The police are on the lookout for Suresh, Jagan and Sivakumar.

Further investigation is on.

Gang held for murder

A seven-member gang allegedly hacked to death two persons in New Washermanpet on Saturday.

The bodies were removed to Stanley Medical College hospital for post-mortem.

Police said the victims, J. Anbu (32), an illicit liquor vendor of Kancheepuram, was living in a house in New Washermanpet. On Saturday around 11.30 a.m. the victim with his friend Sarathy (30) of the same area, were on their way to see Sujatha, wife of Anbu, who was admitted to the Peripheral hospital in New Washermenpet.

When they were nearing the hospital, the gang attacked them with sabres and escaped in an autorickshaw. The Tondiarpet police are investigating.
