Helmet dealers warned against overpricing

CHENNAI: The Transport Department on Saturday filed police complaints against 18 helmet retailers in the city for seeking to sell the protective headgear above the maximum retail price.

A press note issued by Joint Transport Commissioner K.Yogarajan said the Transport Commissioner's office had received numerous complaints in recent days of retailers having steeply increased helmet prices to cash in on the rush coinciding with the enforcement of the compulsory helmet rule. Transport Commissioner C.P. Singh had directed Regional Transport Officers to carry out random checks at helmet stores. On Saturday the RTOs carried out checks and 18 dealers were found guilty of overpricing.

RTO-Chennai East filed complaints against five dealers. Two of them were lodged with the Law College Police Station and three with the Anna Salai Police Station. RTO-Chennai West filed complaints against 10 dealers — four with the office of the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Adyar and six with the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Anna Salai. RTO-Chennai Central filed complaints against two dealers — one with the Sembium Police Station and the other with the Anna Nagar Police Station.

The Transport Department has warned all helmet dealers against overpricing helmets. The public can contact the Joint Transport Commissioner's office to register complaints. Call 2644 4445 and 2644 5511.
