CHENNAI: Residents of Ambattur suggested that the local civic body be empowered to enforce building regulations at a consultation organised by the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) on Saturday. The consultation on the Draft Master Plan in Anna Nagar did not see much response, CMDA officials said. Ambattur residents came up with several suggestions related to infrastructure and questioned some of the proposals in the Plan. A number of them expressed concern at the state of the water bodies in the area and urged that they be taken over by Metrowater, officials said. Sewage was being dumped in the Ayarpakkam Lake by the TNHB and in the Korattur Lake by industries, residents alleged. Encroachment on tanks was another cause for concern, with the Thirumazhisai tank given as example. A service road alongside development works like flyovers, declaring Ambattur an IT corridor, establishing a government hospital in the region, extending the MRTS to Koyambedu and constructing a flyover at Thirumangalam were other suggestions. Of the proposals in the plan, the penalty imposed on landowners in the Open Space Reservation area was questioned. If land was declared as Open Space and people were allowed to continue living in the area after payment of fine, the proposal was self-defeating, they contended. Also, commercial area development could be permitted at 100 metres of the catchment area, they suggested. Improper water supply, traffic congestion on the MTH Road, lack of progress on the arterial road proposal between Athipattu and Ambattur, the presence of industries in residential areas and the lack of telephone lines for Thiruverkadu were complaints that came up. In Puzhal, land allocated for a park in Kannappan area layout was sold unauthorised, residents said.
