Bangalore: The residents of villages in 11 north Karnataka districts suffering from fluorosis will get clean water only after a year or so when the Government implements 34 schemes under the Rajiv Gandhi Drinking Water Project. The cost of the project is Rs. 152 crore. Minister for Rural Water Supply and Sugar S.A. Ravindranath told presspersons here on Saturday that tenders had been invited for implementing the schemes and the process would be over in a month.
34 schemes approved
He said the Government had submitted 164 schemes involving an expenditure of Rs. 849 crore to the Union Rural Development Ministry and the latter had approved 34 schemes. Mr. Ravindranath said the remaining schemes would be approved by the Centre soon. He said that a Rs. 10-crore project had been undertaken in Athani and Raibagh taluks in Belgaum district and all the six schemes would be computed in four months. The State Government had shared 25 per cent of the project cost, he added. The Minister said that water was available in most areas and it was no longer a problem, thanks to the good rainfall. However, the department had sanctioned Rs. 31 crore to deputy commissioners to sink borewells and lay pipelines in villages.
