HYDERABAD: Guess what could be the reaction of authorities to a complaint about construction of a house on public road? Well the authorities did not promise action, but suggested a settlement!

This was how the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Commission responded to a complaint by Megha, an advocate of Charkaman in old city. In the `Face-to-Face' programme held here on Saturday, Megha poured out her woes. The six-feet road was encroached and construction going on, unchecked. The complaint to the civic body was of no avail. While agreeing that the construction was illegal, officials suggested a compromise, Megha said as a shocked Mohd. Ali Shabbir, Minister for Coal and Minorities Welfare listened. GHMC Commissioner C.V.S.K.Sharma assured to take action after seeing the file.

Encroachment

There was another complaint about encroachment of wakf land at Himayatnagar. Prime land worth Rs.20 crore was encroached upon and the land-grabbers even obtained building permission from GHMC and also a stay on the notice served by it. The complainant Ahmed said the construction was going on during night in violation of court orders. Responding to one question by Akash of Begum Bazar, BC Welfare Minister M.Mukesh Goud said the bridge constructed parallel to Mulsim Jung Pul would be inaugurated by July 15 by the Chief Minister.

Work on Alwal lake

To a question the GHMC Commissioner said work on the Alwal lake to check its overflow during monsoon would be taken up shortly. The tender process was on. HMWS &SB Managing Director K.S. Jawahar Reddy informed the complainant Ashok Kumar that drinking water supply to Alwal would be streamlined shortly. One Shiv Kumar complained about his mother not getting family pension. An LDC in the Corporation even demanded money for it, Mr.Shivkumar alleged. Mr.Sharma promised to look into the file and do the needful.

Mr.Shabbir later informed that 70,000 houses in some areas would be supplied 24- hour drinking water on a trial basis. As and when the infrastructure was ready the facility would be extended to other areas.
