Government plans law to help traditional fishermen

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: The State Government plans to bring in a legislation that would enable traditional fishermen to engage in fishing during the monsoon trawl ban period. A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting of the various stakeholders held here on Sunday. According to a recent Supreme Court direction, no vessels fitted with engines above 10 hp can venture out to sea for fishing operations during the ban period. The decision would lead to the denial of livelihood for thousands of traditional fishermen of the State, said the delegates who attended the meeting.

The meeting also demanded a comprehensive legislation for protecting the rights of traditional fishermen during the ban period. Fisheries Minister S. Sarma assured that a legislation would be enacted during the next session of the State Assembly scheduled to begin on June 19.

Incidentally, the annual monsoon trawl ban will come into force on June 15 in the State. Senior officials of the Department and representatives of various organisations of fishermen attended the meeting.
