Community policing to be strengthened

Kannur, Kasaragod to get adequate police personnel: Kodiyeri Balakrishnan

KANNUR: Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan has said that all police stations in the Kannur and Kasaragod districts will be provided with required number of police personnel by August 1 as part of improving the efficiency of the police force in the region.

He was addressing senior police officers of the two districts at a review meeting chaired by him at the Collectorate conference hall here on Sunday.

Circle Inspectors in the police stations concerned had been entrusted with the task of ensuring that the police stations had adequate number of personnel, Mr. Balakrishnan said. He told the officers that the Government would not entertain after August any complaint from police officers about shortage of personnel in the police stations, he said.

Steps were on to introduce community policing system in municipalities and corporations in the State as part of efforts of the State police to improve police-public relations, Mr. Balakrishnan said. The new system as recommended by the K.T. Thomas Commission would be implemented from September this year, he said.

The Circle Inspectors concerned should take the initiative to introduce the community policing system in police stations in all municipal areas of the Kannur and Kasaragod districts, he added.

Mr. Balakrishnan also called on the police officers to take strong action against anti-social elements, including what he called the money-lending `mafia' and hired goons if the latter attempted to take law into their hands. The officers should not hesitate to take them into preventive custody if the situation so warranted.

Mr. Balakrishnan drew the attention of the police officers to rising incidents of thefts and burglary. He said that night patrolling should be strengthened by maintaining constant vigil during night hours.
