Bangalore: The State Government has implemented a major judgment of the Supreme Court and appointed protection officers in each taluk for helping women, who were victims of domestic violence by their husbands and other relatives to launch criminal proceedings against the accused persons. Addressing presspersons, Minister for Women and Child Welfare H.K. Kumaraswamy said on Saturday that the child development programme officers (CDPO) in all the taluks would look into the cases of domestic violence. The CDPOs, he said, were presently entrusted with the job of looking into cases of violence against children. Mr. Kumaraswamy said that the apex court had ordered all the States to appoint protection officers a few months ago and that Karnataka was one of the few States to comply with it. The protection officers have special powers to lodge complaints with the police station concerned on behalf of the victim. He or she could also file private petitions directly to the magistrates concerned on her behalf. The Minister said that workers to 5,600 anganavadis in the State would be recruited before June 20 and the MLAs, heading the Anganawadi Workers Selection Committees had been directed to complete the process within that time. The Karnataka High Court had vacated the stay on the recruitment of anganavadi workers recently following which a decision to go ahead with the appointment was taken, he said. Each woman appointed would get a honorarium of Rs.1,750 a month, the Minister said.
