"Bid to demolish AIADMK headquarters"

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: AIADMK general secretary has charged the DMK Government with an attempt to demolish the party headquarters on the Avvai Shanmugham Salai.

Vengeful activities

Citing a communication allegedly sent to the party office by the Government on June 2, Ms. Jayalalithaa, in a statement here on Sunday, said it was an indication of the vengeful and undemocratic activities of the DMK Government, which attempted to suppress the voice of the opposition.

The party headquarters was constructed when MGR launched the AIADMK in 1972 and had become "an integral part in the lives of the poor people in the State".

The DMK Government was attempting to demolish the building, unaware of the consequences of such an action.

Recalling an incident in 1989 when she was the leader of the opposition, Ms. Jayalalithaa said the then DMK government had arrested two party functionaries inside the party office and sealed the office under the Indian Criminal Procedure Code.

The AIADMK had to move the Supreme Court to regain possession of the building, Ms. Jayalalithaa said.

The party, with the help of its cadres, would thwart any such attempt by the Government, she said.
