BANGALORE: A petty-shop owner was brutally tortured to death by five suspected naxalites as they believed him to be a police informant, in Sringeri Police Station limits on Sunday. The police gave the name of the victim as Kesmudi Venkatesh, a resident of Gandagatta, situated between Sringeri and Kigga. According to eyewitnesses, five persons descended on the shop at around 7.30 p.m. They allegedly warned Venkatesh's wife not to venture out of the house and then entered the shop. Meanwhile, Venkatesh's brother fled on seeing the group, while another shopkeeper downed his shutters in fear. Venkatesh's wife came out of the house only to find his badly mutilated body. The body bore a number of cut wounds. The group also set fire to a motorcycle belonging to Venkatesh. Eyewitnesses said the assailants left pamphlets that stated that police informants should be punished. The police suspect that the naxalites retaliated to the recent encounter killing of one Dinakar, a suspected naxalite, near Kigga. The Chikmagalur Superintendent of Police Vipul Kumar rushed to the spot.
