Two held for theft and pick pocketing

NEW DELHI: Two men have been arrested by the North Delhi police for their alleged involvement in several cases of bag-lifting, theft and pick pocketing. A laptop, three mobile phones and Rs. 37,790 in cash have allegedly been recovered from them.

According to the police, 35-year-old Islam hit one Suresh Chandok with a bicycle near Fathepuri Mosque on Thursday. Islam's accomplice Rahmat picked his pocket and the two tried to flee with the cash.

When Suresh raised an alarm, a policeman gave them a chase and arrested Islam.

Rahmat was later arrested at New Usmanpur.

BJP speaks out for street vendors

NEW DELHI: Bharatiya Janata Party secretary Vijay Goel on Sunday said that his party would take to the streets to fight for rights of street vendors if the Government did not break its silence on the all-important issue.

Accusing the Government of being a party to the "conspiracy" to drive out the street vendors from the city,

Mr. Goel said that it was a well-planned move to help the owners of shopping malls and restaurants. Instead of depriving the vendors of their source of livelihood, the Government should educate them on the need to maintain hygiene. The street food is an indispensable part of Delhi's culture and banning it would destroy the city's culture, said Mr. Goel.

New Director (Slum and JJ) appointed

NEW DELHI: Municipal Corporation of Delhi Deputy Assessor and Collector (Headquarter) Suresh Chandra Yadav has been promoted as Director (Slum and JJ). He will take charge of the office early next week.

"Mr. Yadav is one such officer who empathises with the problems and feelings of the common man. A man of letters, Mr. Yadav is sensitive and innovative," his colleagues said. Mr. Yadav said he would ensure that slum-dwellers and the underprivileged reap the benefits of the various schemes of the municipal body.

Fire in East Delhi

New Delhi: Several hutments were gutted in a major fire that raged through a densely populated slum cluster in east Delhi on Sunday.

The blaze broke out in the slums near Shastri Park Metro station at around 4 P.M. and it took the emergency personnel over an hour to douse the fire.

``Nobody was injured in the fire, but some 70 shanties were gutted,'' the fire department said.
