MANGALORE: Harikrishna Punaroor, former president of Kannada Sahitya Parishat has said that the stand taken by Chandrashekar Patil on the introduction of English as a subject from first standard was a publicity stunt. "The parishat must take a collective decision and cannot go by individual opinions in this regard," Mr. Punaroor said. In a press release here, Mr. Punaroor has said Mr. Patil should have convened a meeting of the executive committee of the parishat and sought opinions of district presidents before taking a final decision in the matter. Terming the statement of Mr Patil to stage dharna as a unilateral decision, Mr. Punaroor accused Mr. Patil of indulging in plagiarism. "Mr. Patil has removed my name from the books published during my tenure and reprinted them under his name. This has only lowered the reputation of the parishat and smacks of intellectual bankruptcy in the organisation," Mr Punaroor charged. Expressing doubts about Mr. Patil conducting elections to the parishat at the expiry of his term in November, Mr. Punaroor said the alleged misuse of funds by Mr. Patil during his tenure as the Chairman of Kannada Development Authority had earned him the ire of the State Government. Mr. Punaroor urged the Chief Minister to order a probe into this episode and initiate action against Mr. Patil.
