This Day That Age
Tengku Abdul Rahman will be the first Prime Minister and Foreign Minister in independent Malaya from August 31. He will give up his Defence portfolio, which, in all likelihood, will fall on the shoulders of the present Finance Minister in the Alliance Government, Col. H.S. Lee. A major Cabinet reshuffle is expected immediately after Merdeka and the Prime Minister's primary aim in taking up the Foreign Affairs portfolio is to "forge links with neighbouring countries and friends." The first task, he said in Singapore on June 3, would be to build Malaya into a strong nation instead of taking an active role in foreign diplomatic battles and getting involved in power politics.
