dated June 5, 1957: Review of U.N. Charter

The UN has agreed to defer until 1959 any move to call a world conference to review the Charter. The General Assembly's 81-member Committee, meeting in a special session on June 3, adopted a resolution calling for recommendations to the 14th Assembly, due to meet in September 1959. Delegates supporting the draft said they hoped the world situation would have improved enough by then, to ensure the success of such a conference. Voting on the resolution, tabled by India, Canada, Ireland and seven other nations, was 67 to none with nine abstentions.
