ERODE: "The Government has sanctioned Rs. 11 crore to develop the Erode-Perundurai road (18 km stretch) into a four lane to ease congestion and the work has already been commenced," said Highways Minister M.P. Saminathan here on Monday. He was inaugurating the planting of saplings on highways in Pazhayapalayam here.
Maintenance
The Minister said that in Tamil Nadu the State highways department had been maintaining 9256 km roads, of which this 6000-km roads were double roads. Some of them had been converted to four lanes. The remaining 3256 km roads were single roads. Now the Government was developing some single roads into double roads and the rural roads into motorable ones. He wanted the local bodies to improve such roads and the NABARD was funding for such developments. Mr. Saminathan said that last year Rs. 3,267 crore was sanctioned for road developments in Tamil Nadu. This year Rs. 3,527 crore had been sanctioned in the budget. With this, all the roads in the State would be developed and bridges would also be constructed wherever necessary.
Ring road
On the formation of 26-km ring road for Erode, he said that proposals had been finalised. The Government had sanctioned Rs. 70 crore for land acquisition. After acquiring the land, the ring road would be formed.
Overbridges
Similarly, two overbridges one each at the Erode Government Headquarters Hospital Junction and Paneerselvam Park Junction would be constructed. The Minister said to mark the 84th birthday of Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, three lakh saplings would be planted in the State. He wanted the local body representatives to maintain the saplings properly.
Saplings
Collector T. Udhaychandran who presided said that as many as 68,620 saplings would be planted in the district from Monday. This was 22 per cent of the total saplings to be planted in Tamil Nadu, the Collector said. Former Erode municipal chairman M. Subramanian, Surampatty municipal chairman V.S. Loganathan, Kasipalayam municipal chairman Subramaniam, chief engineer, Highways Planning Unit, Pon Shanmugam, superintending engineer, Highways John and divisional engineer S. Krishnamurthy spoke.
