Letters to the Editor
It ought to be a matter of concern for the governing classes that social unrest has spread to a comparatively peaceful State. Social dissatisfaction comes to the fore when the economic situation of the people deteriorates. The single-minded pursuit of economic growth by the Centre and the State governments, with the corporates and highly educated middle classes reaping all the immediate rewards and the poor largely bearing the cost thereof, is a sure recipe for social unrest.
If today it is Rajasthan, tomorrow it could well be another State and yet another community. The benefits of growth should reach the poor and backward in the form of education, employment generation, potable water, sanitation, and primary health care.
In the meantime, some constitutional mechanism should be put in place to keep our political parties from continuing with their divide and rule policies.
Raghubir Singh,
Those who are violently demanding that they be included in the list that will open up more sops for them are unfortunately not demanding that they be given access to quality basic education that will enable them to compete with the rest on an equal footing.
V. Vanamali,
