Staff Reporter

R. Elango has been chosen for his efforts to promote `network growth economy'

Chennai : A rural economic growth programme started in Kuthambakkam panchayat in Tiruvallur district is set to get a boost with funding help from the Chennai-based Shriram Group.

The firm's literary wing Shriram Ilakkiya Kazhagam will present the Aram Award for 2006 to R. Elango, managing trustee of the Trust for Village Self Governance, Kuthambakkam.

The former panchayat president will get a cash prize of Rs. 1 lakh.

As a recognition for the rural initiative, the Shriram Group will also give a grant of Rs. 1 lakh and an interest-free loan of Rs. 2 lakh.

Shriram Ilakkiya Kazhagam's Tirukkural Festival Committee's chairman Avvai Natarajan said on Saturday that Governor Surjit Singh Barnala would present the award on June 6 at Narada Gana Sabha.

The Aram award was instituted to honour persons who contributed to society by adhering to values advocated in the `Tirukkural'.

R. Kousalya Devi of Gandhi Gram Trust, M.P. Vasimalai of Dhan Foundation and Govindappa Venkataswamy of Aravind Eye Hospital received the award earlier.

Shriram Group Director R. Kannan said Mr. Elango has been chosen for his efforts to promote `network growth economy' based on the idea of uniting villages to produce essential commodities for themselves.

Rural enterprises planned

The trust has planned 40 rural enterprises in a 20-village cluster.

Shriram Ilakkiya Kazhagam conducted school and college-level elocution competitions on Tirukkural in Chennai, Vellore, Coimbatore, Salem, Madurai, Tirunelveli, Tiruchi and Puducherry. Cash prizes will be awarded to 12 winners.
