Government urged to create awareness of wearing helmets

Call to streamline operation of mini buses

Nagercoil: The District Road Safety Council here has urged the Government to create awareness among the public about the usage of helmets and belts.

Presiding over the council meeting here on Monday, the Collector-in-charge, B. Jothi Nirmala, said that it was decided to install hoardings in front of various Government offices so that public could be educated about the importance of wearing helmets and fastening belts in vehicles. Those visiting the Regional Transport Office would be distributed with pamphlets containing message on using helmets and belts. Officials of the RTO office have also sought the allotment of Rs.50,000 from road safety fund to issue guidebooks and for the conduct of monthly meeting.

The MLA of Padmanabhapuram, T. Theodre Reginald, demanded the district administration to streamline the operation of mini buses.

The general secretary of Kanyakumari Jilla Consumer Protection Centre, M. Thomas, said that the district administration should remove encroachments on both sides of roads within Nagercoil, Kuzhithurai, Colachel and Padmanabhapuram municipal limits to ensure free flow of traffic. The district administration should also come forward to ban the use of air horns within town limits, as it would cause noise pollution.

The Government has allotted Rs15.25 lakh for the implementation of various schemes to ensure the welfare of public in the last year in connection with road safety. During the last meeting it was also decided to shift the bus stand at Vadaserry Junction to S.M.R.V. Higher Secondary School. Buses operating from Nagercoil Anna bus stand, including Boothapandi and Keeripparai (4, 4A, 4B, 4C, 4D, 4E, 4G and 4H), and these buses would be stopped at S.M.R.V. Higher Secondary School instead of Vadaserry Junction. Similarly in order to ease traffic congestion buses operating from Nagercoil to Kanyakumari and Anjugramam via Suchindram, including 1C, 1D, 1E, 1F, 1H, 1K, 2, 2V, 2B, 2C, 2D, 3, 3A, 3B, 3C, 3E, EF, PGC, PHS, 15V, 2D, 38D and 33B town buses and 303 E, 570, 572, 573 and 505 mofussil buses would be diverted through Kottar railway station, said the collector-in-charge.
