Banerji Club sealed, land recovered

THRISSUR: Banerji Club, one of the oldest clubs in the district, was sealed by revenue officials on Monday and recovered 51.625 cents of land held by the club. Tahsildar P. V. Varghese led the recovery proceedings. Additional District Magistrate P.M. Francis and Revenue Divisional Officer P. Suresh Babu were present. Policemen were deployed in large numbers.

Revenue officials said the building and land were recovered after an eviction notice was served 24 hours ago.

Club office-bearers met Chief Minister V. S. Achuthanandan on Monday. He reportedly promised to extend the deadline by two days if recovery proceedings had not been initiated. But proceedings were initiated around 7.30 a.m. on Monday and the club sealed around 8.55 a.m.

Club office-bearers alleged they were not given enough time to remove property, including furniture and a billiard table. The club, established in 1914, is affiliated to some of the well-known clubs in the country.
