THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State executive of the Communist Party of India (CPI) has taken exception to the action taken against the CPI office in Munnar by Special Task Force (STF) officials. The executive, which met here on Monday, with K. C. Pillai in the chair, used strong words like "excess" and "unjust" to describe the action. It contended that the office building was constructed on land purchased by the party in 1958. It was not an encroached land. It was the staircase of the building which the officials demolished with huge police protection on the ground that it was an obstruction to road widening. The demolition of the staircase on May 14 after serving notice for dismantling it by May 25 was inexplicable. The meeting wondered whether it was part of a move to characterise the party which took a strong stand against encroachers as an "encroacher."
Strong action
It said strong action against the encroachers of revenue and forest land should continue. Steps were being taken in different parts of the State to restore encroached land. The Government had already taken over hundreds of acres of land. The executive said thousands of acres were still in the possession of encroachers in places such as Munnar and Chinnakanal. They were big- timers. Steps should be taken to restore that land. Party considerations should not come in the way. The Government should also not succumb to any pressure.
