Congress re-nominates Gnanadesikan for Rajya Sabha
Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI:
The Congress on Monday decided to re-nominate B.S. Gnanadesikan as the candidate for the Rajya Sabha biennial elections from Tamil Nadu.
Mr. Gnanadesikan's term as MP is scheduled to expire on July 24.
The decision, communicated on Monday, came just a day before the close of nomination on June 5 and was announced by party general secretary Janardan Dwivedi.
Elected on TMC ticket
The 58-year old nominee was earlier elected on the Tamil Maanila Congress ticket.
A practising lawyer of the Madras High Court, Mr. Gnanadesikan had joined the Congress in 1967 when he was a student.
He held various positions in the Youth Congress from 1967 to 1984 and was nominated as chairman of the legal cell of the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee by Rajiv Gandhi in 1984.
He joined the Tamil Maanila Congress when it was floated by G.K. Moopanar in 1996.
He served as party's official spokesperson till he was nominated to the Rajya Sabha in 2001.
He joined the Congress when the Tamil Nadu Congress merged with that party.
Of the six Rajya Sabha MPs, whose term is to expire in July, he is the only MP to be re-nominated.
