Helmets now optional for women, children riding pillion
Special Correspondent
NECESSARY BUT NOT MANDATORY: Following representations, the Government has exempted women and children riding pillion from the helmet rule.
CHENNAI:
In an attempt to clear the confusion over the implementation of the helmet rule for two wheeler riders and pillion riders, the State Government on Monday said the option of wearing helmet would be left to women and children pillion riders. For the others, helmets would be compulsory.
Wearing helmet had been made compulsory under the Central Motor Vehicle Act and the enforcement of the rule for two-wheeler riders and pillion riders in areas under all the six corporations including Chennai started on June 1.
The Government received several representations with regard to problems faced by women and children riding on the pillion, the release said.
