BERHAMPUR: Ganjam district is on the threshold of becoming the first `total banking district' in Orissa. According to R.N. Senapati, the lead district manager (LDM), who is leading the team of bankers in Ganjam to achieve the goal, they have already covered 97 per cent of the families in the district. The concept of `total banking district' means each household of the district would be having at least one bank pass book. This project aimed at achieving 100 percent financial inclusion by providing `no frills' account and General Purpose Credit Card scheme of Reserve Bank of India was launched in the district on July 26, 2006 by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik as a pilot project for the State. After successful completion of the total banking district project in Ganjam, similar projects would be initiated in other 29 districts of the State. The aim of the project is to bring the rural mass into banking fold so that they can avail different facilities including the credit from banks.
