Patil briefs CWC on Rajasthan situation

Special Correspondent

Members decide not to broach reservation issue now

  • Organisational issues discussed
  • U.P. results not raised

NEW DELHI: The Congress Working Committee on Monday emphasised the need for restoring normality immediately in Rajasthan, which witnessed clashes and violence following Gujjars' demand for Scheduled Tribe status.

(The six-day agitation has since ended following talks.)

Briefing correspondents, general secretary Janardan Dwivedi said Satyavrat Chaturvedi, who led a delegation to the trouble-torn areas, and Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil briefed the CWC.

The former Chief Minister and party general secretary Ashok Gehlot also took part in the discussions on the issue.

It is understood that members decided not to broach the issue of reservation at this juncture as the immediate priority was restoring peace.A resolution expressed concern over the violence and loss of lives. Another resolution mourned the former party general secretary and Union Minister Chandrajit Yadav.

The meeting discussed organisational issues, including suggestions to do away with two sets of membership, primary and active, and a change in preparations for the AICC plenary so that delegates would get more time to take part in discussions on resolutions.

A committee under Pranab Mukherjee was already studying the issue and its proposals would be discussed by the CWC and then sent to the Pradesh Congress Committees for broader consultations.

The suggestions included bringing about changes in the organisational structure so that local bodies/panchayati raj institutions could also find representation.
