Being liberal or strict are cliches, says Judge

MADURAI: A judge being liberal or strict was of very little significance; ultimately, what mattered was whether justice had been done to the common man, said K. Chandru, Judge, Madras High Court, here on Monday.

Addressing the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court Bar Association (MMBA), he said that the judiciary did not exist only for lawyers. "This institution stands for the rights of common man. Being liberal or strict are clichés. At the end of the day, what will stand is the rule of law. Both the Bar and the Bench should strive to serve the purpose," he said.

Earlier, the association President Isaac Mohanlal stated that judges should be a little more compassionate towards the lawyers practising in the Madurai Bench as the institution was in its nascent stage. To this, Mr. Chandru said, "We (Judges) have come here with a mission to serve and it is the same whether it is Madras or Madurai. It is not our personal joy or personal faith to be harsh towards you."

Pointing out that writ petitions filed as early as 1997 were pending adjudication before the principal seat of the Madras High Court, he said piling up of cases should not happen in the Madurai Bench too. "Today, people are looking increasingly towards the judiciary... We should not fail in fulfilling their aspirations."

Of compassion

In her address, Chitra Venkataraman, judge, said that justice was always an aspect of compassion and they did not diverge from each other. Every profession was a learning process and nobody could claim to be an absolute expert in a subject.

The association felicitated both the Judges who had been posted in the Madurai Bench for the first time ever since they were elevated as Judges of the High Court. MMBA secretary K. Mahendran and vice-president Veera Kathiravan were present.
