A master plan for developing and interlinking inland waterways in the entire country from east to west and north to south is under preparation under the auspices of the Union Transport Ministry. The object of the master plan is to link all major rivers of the country by means of a network of canals and various reservoirs and make them navigable so that small ships and craft could ply from one end of the country to another. An outline of the contemplated long-term plan for interlinking inland waterways was explained to newsmen in Poona on June 4 by Mr. B.K. Gokhale, Chairman of the Inland Water Transport Committee. The Committee, appointed by the Union Ministry of Transport, held its first meeting in Poona.
