28-member Indian contingent for Commonwealth championship

NEW DELHI: The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) has named a 28-member team for the Commonwealth championship to be held in Ontario, Canada from June 15 to 17.

The new body of the WFI has decided to field two men's teams in the freestyle category.

The wrestlers are currently in the training camp at Shilaroo, Himachal Pradesh. Out of the 80-odd probables that took part in the camp in Shilaroo, the WFI has selected 21 grapplers, 14 in freestyle and seven in Greco-Roman. The women wrestlers had their camp in Delhi and seven made it to the team as expected.

But in the men's section, super-heavy Palwinder Cheema, and Mukesh Khatri, have been dropped.

The Indian team will also participate in the Canada Cup tournament to be held at the same venue from June 18 to 23.

The team:

Men: Freestyle: Team A: Kripa Shankar Patel (55kg), Yogeshwar Dutt (60kg), Sushil Kumar (66kg). Narsingh Pancham Yadav (74kg), Amit Kumar (84kg), Narender Singh (96kg), Joginder Kumar (120kg).

Team B: Vinod Kumar (55kg), Hardeep Singh (60kg), Amit Kumar (66kg), Paramjeet (74kg), Jang Bahadur (84kg), Anil Kumar Mann (96kg), Rajiv Tomar (120kg).

Greco-Roman: Kanhyalal Yadav (55kg), Ravinder Singh (60kg), Gurbinder Singh (66kg), Sanjay (74kg). Manoj Kumar (84kg), Ashok Kumar (96kg), Dharmender Dalal (120kg).

Women: Nirmala Devi (48kg), Kamini Yadav (51kg), Manju (55kg), Alka Tomar (59kg), Geetika Jakhar (63kg), Jyoti (67kg), Minakshi Devi (72kg). — Principal Correspondent
