Safety compromised

This refers to the report that helmet-wearing for two-wheeler riders in six corporations of Tamil Nadu, that was made compulsory since June 1, is now optional for women and children riding the pillion. It is common knowledge that when a two-wheeler is involved in an accident, the pillion rider is more likely to be thrown off and injured. The safety of pillion riders is more important than the other problems they claim to face by wearing helmets.

Mani Natarajan, Chennai

Any individual who does not wear the helmet risks head injury. Why discriminate among the pillion riders on the basis of gender and age?

Krishna Kumar, Chennai
