Corrections and Clarifications

  • The caption of the accompanying AFP photograph in a report "Hope keeps them going" (June 4, 2007) was: "In Search of Kin: Damyan Tambay, member of an Indian delegation, shows pictures of her husband who went missing after the 1971 war between Pakistan and India, in Karachi on Sunday [June 3, 2007]." (The report was on a group of Indians who are now in Pakistan searching for their (54) relatives missing in action from the 1971 Indo-Pakistan war.) A reader from Delhi, M.Y. Khan, and a colleague of the missing men, said that the detail in the caption was incorrect and that they were the pictures of Flt. Lt. Purohit. Barely visible lettering on the photographs mentions the name Flt. Lt. Manohar Purohit. The lady holding the photographs is his wife Suman Purohit. (Damayanti Tambay, and not Damyan Tambay, as was published, is a part of the group now in Pakistan. Her husband Flt. Lt. Vijay Vasant Tambay is listed as missing in action in the 1971 war.) The pictures of the other missing men shown in the AFP photograph are Flt. Lt. Ram Metharam Advani (extreme right and corner top) and Flt. Lt. Shrikant C. Mahajan (in the background, face blurred).

  • Sentences in a PTI report "Superior kills Army jawan" (June 4, 2007), on how an army jawan was shot dead by his superior after an argument in Poonch, was: "Lance Naik Rajkumar of 13 Sikh Light Infantry battalion got into a verbal duel with sepoy Malkeet Singh ... Lance Naik later took out his rifle and shot Mr. Singh." A reader points out that Lance Naik is not a name but a rank and that the sepoy should have been referred to by his rank and not as Mr. Singh. Lance Naik is a rank senior to a sepoy, but not a "superior".

  • Some errors in the sports pages. In a report on the French Open "Hewitt advances to third round after valiant effort" (June 1, 2007), Rafael Nadal beat Flavio Cipola 6-2, 6-1, 6-4, and not 6-2, 6-2, 6-4 as was published in the results column. The error was in the early editions.

  • A report "French Open continues to elude Mauresmo" (June 3, 2007) stated that Anna Chakvetadze of Russia defeated Japan's Ai Sugiyama 6-4, 6-4, for a place in the last eight. It should have been last 16.

  • In a report "The Serbian surge continues" (June 5, 2007), the final set score in the match between Carlos Moya and Jonas Bjorkman should have been 7-5, as listed in the results column, and not 6-4 as published in the text.

  • In a report "Henin desperate to keep lucky charm" (June 5, 2007), Venus Williams went down in three sets against Jelena Jankovic, and not in straight sets as was stated in the text.
