Gnanadesikan files papers for Rajya Sabha election

CHENNAI: Congress nominee B.S. Gnanadesikan on Tuesday filed his papers for the Rajya Sabha biennial elections slated for June 15.

Chief Electoral Officer Naresh Gupta said here that Mr. Gnanadesikan filed three sets of nomination papers. His nomination was proposed by MLAs belonging to the Congress and its electoral allies.

Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, Finance Minister K. Anbazhagan, Congress Legislature Party leader D. Sudarsanam, Pattali Makkal Katchi president G. K. Mani, Communist Party of India leader V. Sivapunniyam and Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi leader K. Selvam were among those who proposed his nomination.

Shortly after filing his papers, Mr. Gnanadesikan told reporters that he gratefully remembered the goodwill of G.K. Moopanar, who chose him as the party nominee for the Rajya Sabha in 2001. He also thanked Congress president Sonia Gandhi for re-nominating him now, as part of measures to strengthen the party in the State. He would live up to the expectations of the activists and leaders of the Congress and its allies, he said, adding that he would work for the welfare of the State.

In the affidavit filed by him, he stated that among his movable assets Rs.50,000 in cash was with him and Rs. 10,000 in his wife G. Thilagavathy's possession. He had bank deposits to the tune of Rs. 26,18,912, including Rs.72,150 jointly operated by him and his wife. He had taken a mediclaim policy for Rs. 5,00,000. He owned a 1996 model Ambassador diesel car and gold jewellery worth Rs.19,752. He drew bank interest to the tune of Rs.68,107 per year.

Bank deposits to the tune of Rs.17,73,367, a mediclaim for Rs.1,50,000, Reliance Petroleum shares worth Rs.1,455, gold and diamond jewellery worth Rs.6,97,560 were among the movable assets in his wife's possession.

Among the immovable assets Mr. Gnanadesikan had agricultural lands in Theni and Dindigul districts worth Rs. 31.26 lakh and non-agricultural land worth Rs. 50,000 at Kanavaipatti village in Dindigul district.

He had apartments — one worth Rs. 55,12,500, solely owned by him, and another apartment in which he had a share of Rs. 22,31,250 in Chennai.

He also owned a commercial building worth Rs. 20 lakh at Batlagundu in Dindigul district and a residential building worth Rs.12 lakh in Kodaikanal.

He had a bank loan outstanding of Rs. 29.52 lakh. An agricultural land worth Rs. 7,35,000 was in the name of his wife, the affidavit said.
