Emburey in the race

Special Correspondent

Chennai: Former England off-spinner John Emburey is the second contender for the job of the Indian cricket team coach.

Confirming this to The Hindu on Tuesday, the BCCI executive secretary Prof. Ratnakar Shetty said, "Yes, he has been approached and he has informed us about his availability for the job."

Prof. Shetty revealed that former India captain Sunil Gavaskar suggested Emburey's name during the June 4 meeting in Bangalore to select Greg Chappell's successor. "We then decided to pursue the idea," he said.

Both Ford and Emburey, who captained England in two Tests, will be present in Chennai on June 9, where a final meeting to select the Indian coach will be held.

The 54-year-old Emburey played in 64 Tests, picking up 147 wickets at 38.40. In ODIs, he scalped 76 batsmen in 61 games, at a creditable economy rate of 4.10.

He was also a more than useful lower-order batsman with 1,713 Test runs at 22.53, with 10 half-centuries.

In county cricket, he was a formidable adversary. After retirement, he served as the player-cum-coach of Northamptonshire and Middlesex. Emburey was also the Director of Coaching at Middlesex.

The announcement of Emburey's name ended a day of speculation, with several names doing the rounds. There were strong indications that former Sri Lankan captain Arjuna Ranatunga could be the "mysterious" second man in the race.

New South Wales coach Trevor Bayliss was also mentioned in some quarters.
