KASARAGOD: The Government has detected large-scale encroachments of public property by the land `mafia' in corporations and municipalities in the State and stern steps will be taken to recover such land, Revenue Minister K.P. Rajendran has said. He was speaking to mediapersons in Kasaragod on Tuesday. Records related to such encroachments were before the State Assembly. Strong action would be taken against the land mafia in urban areas too. Urban land which would be recovered would be handed over to a land bank. The Government planned to plant trees on such land, Mr. Rajendran said. Government land to the tune of Rs.10,000 crore had been encroached in the State, he said. The previous Governments in the State were aware of the encroachments in the urban areas but the influence of the land mafia had succeeded in preempting stern eviction actions, Mr. Rajendran said. The eviction process initiated by the Government in Munnar was only a beginning. The action would be extended to other areas also, he said. Steps would be taken to recover land from those who had taken it on lease from the Government and violated the terms of the lease, he said. The Government and the Left Democratic Front (LDF) were united in evicting the encroachers, Mr. Rajendran said. He parried questions related to the partial demolition of the Communist Party of India (CPI) office at Munnar. The party State secretary had reacted to the issue, he said. Mr. Rajendran later inaugurated the `My Tree' project of the Government in Kasaragod district at a function at Chemmanad Government High School here. Saplings of trees were distributed to children studying in various schools as part of the project. K.V. Kunjuraman, MLA, presided.
