Governor: provide power to marginalised sections

Staff Reporter

NOVEL INITIATIVE: Governor R.L. Bhatia inaugurating the `Ente Maram' programme as part of the World Environment Day celebrations at Pathiripala, near Palakkad, on Tuesday.

PALAKKAD: Governor R.L. Bhatia has said that the "State has to go further substantially, in electrifying the households of the marginalised sections, including the Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, traditional fishermen and those below the poverty line."

He was launching the Total Energy Security Mission here on Tuesday. The Governor said that Kerala was among the first few States in the country, which had achieved 100 per cent village electrification in the 1970s. However, Kerala was not among the highest achievers in household electrification.

The flagship project, the Total Energy Security Mission being undertaken by the State Government in association with the local Self-Governments, would go a long way in achieving the goal and making available a minimum of one unit of electricity a day in every household, he said.

The Governor stressed the need for ensuring the availability of cooking fuel in every household. The Planning Commission had set a national level target of providing the equivalent of 2 kg of Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) per-capita a month to every household.

The meeting was presided over by Minister for Electricity A.K. Balan.

Minister for Local Administration Paloli Mohammed Kutty; N.N. Krishnadas, MP; K.K. Divakaran, MLA; district panchayat president Subida Ishaq and municipal chairperson V. Devayani addressed the meeting.

Later, in another function at Pathiripala, near here, the Governor has inaugurated the `Ente Maram' (My Tree), a novel project that involved 22 lakh students who planted saplings on the premises of their homes.

The meeting was presided over by Minister for Education M.A. Baby. M. Hamsa, MLA; P. Shivashankar, Director, Public Education; N. Radhakrishnan, Forest and Wildlife Secretary; M. Anilkumar, Additional District Magistrate; among others, spoke.
