TIRURANGADI: The students of A.U.P. School at Irumbuchola in A.R. Nagar Panchayat of Malappuram district celebrated the World Environment Day in a unique way on Tuesday. Holding saplings in one hand, 600-odd schoolchildren marched to an unused paddy field, formed a human chain, and took a pledge for environment protection. Seeing the children take the initiative, many elders too joined the cause. The children clubbed their response to the World Environment Day with the State Government-sponsored project, `Ente Maram'. The saplings they held were distributed as part of this project.
Placards' messages
They held placards warning against the environmental hazards that filling of paddy fields might lead to. "Environment is as important as the breath we take," read a placard. Singing a song `Ente Maram Ponmaram', the children planted their saplings at specified plots. The planting process was kicked off with Safanath, a seventh standard student of the school, planting her sapling at her compound. J.S. Krishna, a sixth standard student, administered the pledge for environment protection. Local civic leaders and government officials lent support to the children.
