PATHANAMTHITTA: Six more patients from the fever-hit areas of the district died on Tuesday, taking the fever-related death toll here to 19 in one month. The deceased were identified as Sreedharan (60), Thankamma (55), both from Punnamoodu near Koodal, Chinnamma (75) of Seethathode, Maniyan (55) of Thannithode, Sivanandan (73) of Perinad near Ranni and Rajappan (57) of Poovathommoodu near Ranni. Though the cause of death was attributed to different ailments they were suffering from, all the deceased were undergoing treatment for viral fever at various hospitals during the past one week. According to reports, both the private and Government hospitals in Pathanamthitta, Ranni, Kozhencherry, Mallappally, Konni as well as the primary health centres in the affected panchayats have been flooded with fever patients, forcing them to seek medical care at various private hospitals in Thiruvalla. An official release issued by the Fever Containment Cell here said that a total of 2,798 patients had sought treatment for viral fever at various Government and private hospitals in the district on Tuesday. Of this, 102 were suspected chikungunya cases. An entomology team from Chennai visited the affected panchayats of Ranni-Perinad, Ranni-Pazhavangady and Koodal to conduct vector study on Tuesday. A total of 11 outreach medical camps were held at Vallana, Kulanada, Ranni-Perinad, Naranamoozhy, Koodal, Vechoochira, Chathanthara, Vadasserikkara, Malayalappuzha and Ezhamkulam (2 camps) on Tuesday. The release said that a total of 10 house surgeons from the Alappuzha Medical College and four M.Sc. nursing students from the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College attended the outreach camps. A total of 20 nursing students from Archana Hospital at Pandalam, 10 nursing students from SME, Pathanamthitta, 10 from the Nursing School at Elanthoor and six others from the Pushpagiri Medical College participated in the clinics. A constituency-level meeting was held at Adoor to chalk out intensive vector control measures in the Assembly segment. Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, MLA., District panchayat president Appinazhakathu Santhakumari, municipal chairperson Annamma Abraham, District Collector Ashok Kumar Singh, District Programme Manager Vidyadharan and Deputy DMO Purushothama Bhatt attended the meeting.
