Staff Correspondent

LAUDABLE INITIATIVE: Minister for Horticulture Shashikant A. Naik serving food while launching the `bisioota' scheme at a school in Hukkeri in Belgaum district on Tuesday.

Belgaum: Minister for Horticulture and district in-charge Shashikant A. Naik has asked the authorities to strive for the success of the midday meal scheme.

Inaugurating the scheme at a government high school in Hukkeri on Tuesday, he said that the Government had conceptualised the scheme with the objective of bringing down dropout rate from schools and attracting more children belonging to economically weaker sections.

At present, 1.73 lakh children had been benefited by the scheme, he said.

Mr. Naik said that owing to poverty and unemployment many parents had been withdrawing their children from schools. The Government had decided to launch the scheme so as to help the parents by serving the children at least one meal. The response to the scheme was encouraging and the drop out rate had come down, particularly in rural areas of the State, he said.

Lok Sabha MP Ramesh Jigajinagi asked the authorities to ensure good quality food.

B.S. Sarikar, MLA and Sri Chandrashekhar Swamiji spoke.
