ALAPPUZHA: A three-member team of the Medical Council of India (MCI) visited T.D. Medical College at Vandanam near here to evaluate its staff strength and infrastructure to consider the college's request for additional 50 seats. The team led by Anand Kannan will continue the inspection on Wednesday and submit a report to the MCI on Thursday. This is the second time an MCI team is inspecting the medical college within 12 months. A similar inspection was conducted in June last year. T.D. Medical College Principal K.N. Lyla said the previous team had pointed out several deficiencies that stood in the way of the college getting 50 more seats in addition to the existing strength of 100 seats. This included staff shortage of 31 per cent by the MCI standards, inadequate number of classrooms, demonstration halls and lecture halls and also the distance between the medical college, which was at Vandanam, and the hospital, which was situated in Alappuzha town. Dr. Lyla said a major deficiency in the form of the distance between the hospital and the college had been solved with the shifting of most of the departments of the hospital to the Vandanam premises while more classrooms, demo halls and lecture halls were constructed. Around 12 doctors were also transferred recently. "There has been a lot of improvement since the last visit, but we are not sure whether we still measure up to the MCI standards. We are hoping for the best," she said. The teamwill visit the hostels and the healthcare centres affiliated to the medical college on Wednesday.
